Twitch Of The Death Nerve - A New Code Of Morality
Hailing from London, England is the brutal death metal band Twitch Of The Death Nerve. Their debut full-length entitled "A New Code Of Morality", is sure to strike a "nerve" with even the most sophisticated fan of this genre. From beginning to end this album is incredibly thick and monstrous and just absolutely sick as if someone just downed a whole of ipecac syrup and is sitting in front of a high speed fan just waiting for the fun to happen. Can you just imagine how sickening that would be? This album bears the same resemblance. Now, while you are trying to get that visual out of your head, I will tell you all about this cd and why you need it in your collection.
The guitars only resemble the shell of what brutal death metal riffs should be. They also incorporate a strong, classic death metal feel somewhere between "Legion" era Deicide and "Retribution"/"Stillborn" era Malevolent Creation and sludge along with a more grinding element of Immolation "Dawn of Possession" style riffs thrown in to take the riffs over the top. Along with these influences, I also notice a somewhat strong vibe of the band Bound And Gagged. These traditional influences with the proper adjustments add an awesome twist to this material. I would have been so easy for this band to stay within the comfort zone that so many bands do when they incorporate their influences but Twitch Of The Death Nerve decide not to just push the envelope, but rather go into uncharted territory. A lot of guitarists like to show off just how talented and proficient they are in riffs and solos in this type of metal, but not the guitarist here. From the material presented here, you can tell that there is nothing but sheer talent involved. You can almost feel a sense of contentment and pride in the guitar work and, to me, that will win out over showing off any day of the week.
The drums on this recording are the standard and typical of this particular genre. Once again, you can here the ever-present Bound And Gagged vibe here. Other influences to be heard in the drums are the Mexican band Disgorge, Goretrade, and a slight influence of older style Deeds Of Flesh is evident as well. However, while the bass drums sound nice and thick and well-orchestrated in the parts where necessary, I feel the snare sounds a little empty or hollow. Not sure why bands of this genre go for this sound on the drums, but in my opinion it weakens the music a tad bit. Not enough to ruin the whole album, mind you, but enough that it seems to throw things off ever so slightly. With that being said, compared to all the great things happening on this cd, this minor flaw takes a back seat to all else. The vocals are just absolutely maddening. There is one band and one album that I thought of when I heard the vocals on this cd. Infected Flesh’s "Anthropophagical Devourment". I have not heard vocals like this since that album. I really like this style and pattern of vocalizing as it adds that depth and depravity of sickness that this type of music, more often than not, calls for. There are some higher end vocals on these tracks and the combination of highs and lows here is absolutely without flaw.
Twitch Of The Death Nerve have, without a doubt, put together a fine showing on this their debut full-length. True brutal death metal in its purest form with absolutely no compromises or excuses. They incorporate influences nicely and add a little twist to keep things fresh an invigorating. So, if you are a fan of any of the above mentioned bands, then you definitely need to get this cd and listen to it several times and let its sheer brutality soak in. In this particular genre, this is one of the best releases so far this year. I will definitely be waiting for any and all future releases from this band. With that, I take my hat off to this band and give them my total respect for the hard work and determination that they put into this release. Excellent job guys!
