Valgrind - Morning Will Come No More

Aaand yes god damn it, death metal keeps surprising me all the time. There you're sitting like an ass, thinking that after several years in the scene, you are able to judge more or less if you will like something or not, and once you get Valgrind's CD in your hands, your face twists like, ooh fuck, what's this new shit gonna sound like now? The cover sucks. At least that's what I think personally. It brings me memories of shitty black metal band covers and stuff like that. And of course the name of the band is not the perfect choice for a death metal band. I mean ok, Valgrind, in Norse mythology is the main entrance to Valhalla. But… it just isn't death metal enough.

Anyway the first impression sucked, and this made the punch that I took, while listening to it, feel a lot more painful. Fuckin A damn it. Those guys grabbed me from the face and kept on punching me for about an hour and the funny thing is that after the first beating of my pathetic ass, I wanted more! Those Italian ravagers really know how to produce awesome old school death metal! They are one of the few bands that possess the 'how to' on how death metal was played back in the day, and not only in the riffs or the drums. Their whole performance reeks 90s. Of course everything can be explained if someone checks on the history behind those monsters. The band exists, since 1995 and since then they have released only some demos and EPs since 2000 and their last EP, they were put into ice or somethin, to return in 2013 with their first full length under Godeater Records.

"Morning Will Come No More" is the title of Valgrind's full length and it is truly an underground old school death metal masterpiece. It is not only the music and the songs, it is the general aura of this album. It feels like it was released back in 1995 or something. The songs themselves are perfect in construction with no modern exaggerations, and technicalities, unnecessary for the style they chose to play! Of course this doesn't take away the wrath someone would imagine when he thinks of old school brutality. The riffs are monstrous, followed by mid tempo drumbeats, and that, along with the fat bass guitar and the outrageous vocals, make it, almost unbearable not to start headbanging from the first minute. It is an album full of energy that takes you in its vortex. And trust me it is a really heavy one! Of course such an album needs lead themes, guitar solos, that reek the rot of an old age, but that would not be a problem for Valgrind as the boys know how to play their stuff. The whole thing gets even better with some melodic interleaves they use and some other creepy stuff, and let's not forget about the awesome production that takes their ferocity to a new level with its raw and edgy aspect. A truly must for every old schooler that honors his jacket patches and of course for everyone that wants to know how old school barbarity sounds like. All hails Valgrind!
