Vermin - Plunge Into Oblivion
Sweden has proven itself over and over again when the question came to death metal! It is unquestionably the country that has given the most to the whole DEATH METAL term and of course, Sweden has created a unique sound, that whoever wants to follow is automatically labeled under the term Swedish Death Metal. Bands as Entombed, Centinex, Edge Of Sanity, Dismember, Grave and many more, some of them deceased and others still active, have managed to create a tight fat and groovy sound, remaining a solid trademark for the Swedish death metal scene!
Vermin is a band whose actions took place from 1991 till 2000. In these ten years, they managed to release a couple of demos and three full length albums, with "Plunge Into Oblivion" being their first one! Originally released from Chaos Records/House Of Kicks back in 1994 and produced by the mighty Fred Estby of Dismember! Recorded at the legendary Sunlight Studios by Tomas Skogsberg! The recipe for a successful Swedish death metal album. So now in age 2013, 13 whole years after their last full length, Punishment 18 Records, decided to re-release this little diamond of the Swedish death metal scene! So all of you, oldschoolers out there, start rubbing your hands cos I don't think there are many of you who have this Swedish jewel in your possession. And if you ask me. It is like a day hasn't passed! When you purchase this one, you'll automatically get dragged back to 1994, when this whole thing was still brewing! 4 Wrathful youngsters from Sweden, enter the proud gates of Sunlight Studios to turn their lust for xtreme music into something of their own. Unaware at that point that with what they recorded, they would place themselves among the pioneers of the Swedish death metal sound! "Plunge Into Oblivion" has all the technicality the genre allows, and all the integrity you can get from teenagers trying to turn their wrath into music! Of course the experience of Fred Estby and Tomas Skogsberg is there to guide, and show the right way for a guaranteed killer album! Fat guitar sound, that mainly flirts with groovy rhythms and some melodic interleaves that now are a trademark for all the Swedish sound followers. Drums that emphasize the groove of the guitars following with mid tempo double bass drum and thrash metal beat, outbursts, and a bass guitar that makes this sound cohesive and fat as everyone should expect from such a release. The growler is the typical Swedish death metal growler. A harsh voice, not exactly the brutal death metal growling type, but more of a hard voicer. The stomach type. Can't hate it!!
The whole release came straight from 1994 and that's what you should keep in mind! It is a first full length from a band that among others created a sound that nowadays seems extinct. So in age 2013, with the shiny productions and the triggered drum sounds (not that there's anything wrong with it), Punishment 18 Records, comes to remind us how death metal was played something like, 19 years ago when everything was pure, intact and not so easy to record! For the youngsters to learn and the elders to remember.
