Withered – Grief Relic
Not long after the 10 year anniversary of releasing their debut album Withered release their fourth album. Two words to describe this album is punishing and crushing. Black metal, death metal none of those labels come into it this is just a heavy as fuck album.
There are riffs a plenty and changes of pace but for 40 minutes it doesn’t let go and you actually feel at the end like you’ve taken a beating. Again it’s hard to describe, think Mastodon’s first album remission and then take away the melody and you’re nearly there. Just listen to the mammoth 'Husk' with its groove laden opening verse when it kicks in it just kicks you in the gut it’s stupendous!
Another greater great thing about Withered and it’s the mark of any great metal band is that they are heavy without relying on speed or technicality. They focus on strong song craftsmanship and emotion. It doesn’t automatically slot into a genre or any other box like so many of today’s releases (not saying it’s always a bad thing either) but Withered have their own sound and "Grief Relic" is one of the most heaviest albums I’ve heard in recent times. Well worth picking up.
